There has been much discussion about it over the years. probably a number of decades or centuries. People are STILL asking the same question today, even in recent times. Is Travel a Hobby?
Traveling as a pastime has a variety of advantages, including the chance to experience amazing new places, gain insight into other cultures, feel proud of oneself, and even pick up a new language.
What’s A Hobby?
According to Wikipedia, a hobby is considered to be a “regular activity that is done for enjoyment, typically during one’s leisure time.”
Sports, painting, gaming, and reading are a few examples of hobbies.
Traveling can be done for enjoyment, but it isn’t something that most people do on a regular basis, as we can quickly see if we take a moment to consider whether it fits this definition.
What Is Traveling?
Going from one place to another entails traveling, whether by ship, plane, train, or automobile. Most of the time, we go on vacation.
Here are a few of the main justifications for traveling.
Traveling With A Purpose
Many people go on vacation to discover who they are, meet new people, and push the boundaries of their comfort zones.
This is frequently the reason why a lot of people take a sabbatical trip or embark on a global backpacking expedition. They are seeking a test and something fresh.
This is the exact reason I began traveling in the first place: I wanted to broaden my worldview, make friends with people from other cultures, and push myself.
Seeing Amazing Places
Even though I disagree with the quote above in its entirety (see my commentary on Medium here), I do concur that the only way to fully understand the amazing places on Earth such as Aruba, Bahamas, and Medellin is to see them with your own eyes.
Being an armchair traveler or documentary discoverer is simple; you can form an “expert” opinion based on books and photographs, but being there is the only way to truly comprehend.
You can look at all the pictures of Angkor Wat you want, but you won’t truly understand its size, the level of detail in the bas-reliefs, the aroma of incense wafting through the centuries-old halls, or the humidity that is trapped inside the enormous sandstone structures until you actually visit.
So, maybe not everyone is wrong about other countries, but you simply won’t know until you visit for yourself.

Traveling To Relax
Traveling can be a way for some people to unwind and get away from their daily lives. For travelers who take a few vacation weeks each year, this is frequently the situation.
Holidays are typically an occasion for reward or something to anticipate.
Why You Should Travel
People tend to underestimate how important this query is. If you need motivation, search for “travel inspiration” on Google and enjoy hearing and reading the reasons why traveling is the best thing you can ever do.
Even though it is not my opinion, there are some opinions out there that claim it is our duty to travel.
The main piece of advice I would give is to ignore them; you don’t need to be told to travel. It’s always a good idea to research the best places to go, activities to do, and itineraries, but it’s unhealthy to hear someone politely tell you your life will be miserable if you don’t climb a mountain. It might lead you to decide hastily and without giving it much thought.
I’m going to give you some excellent reasons to travel that you may not have heard before.
Is Travel A Hobby? The Benefits
What are the advantages of enjoying travel as a hobby? With so many advantages to traveling, there would undoubtedly be a large number of them. Let’s take a look.
- Travel would be an easy Hobby to get into – Consider your hobbies and how difficult it is to begin. Before you see results, you may work on a hobby for years. You can simply reserve a flight and depart when traveling!
- You learn a lot – How many pastimes can educate you about different cultures? Other languages?
- You can disconnect – In order to get away, many people take annual vacations. Staying at home can make it difficult to unplug from your busy lives.
- Travel is a great stress reliever – Travel is excellent for de-stressing, much like disconnecting. Get away, leave your issues at home, and relax while sipping cocktails on a tropical beach. Your issues can wait!
- Meeting likeminded people – Like nothing else, travel makes it possible for you to interact with others and share experiences.
What Should You Do?
Traveling is such a unique personal experience. Each person engages in it for a different reason and devotes a different amount of time to it.
I strongly believe that you should ignore motivational videos that suggest you spend your life working or staring at a screen. Many of my friends simply don’t want to travel. They seek security and a family.
The likelihood is that if you are reading this, you are not inclined in that direction.
There are numerous avenues for exploration. My sister has traveled to Rwanda and Macedonia on business for Doctors Without Borders. She has walked alongside great apes and gazed into active volcanoes. The whole time, her career and future prospects were being advanced.
There isn’t even a correct way to travel! Consider the benefits you hope to derive from it. Consider your willingness to give up money, relationships, and time. then begin figuring out exactly how to make it happen.
Final Thoughts
I am convinced that traveling IS a hobby. However, each person would travel with their own unique methods, purposes, and goals. Consider these factors when deciding whether or not you travel for work, pleasure, or both.
